  • It is also an international product, providing cardholders with direct access to their funds at any establishment and ATMs around the world.

How does Visa Electron benefit merchants?

With over 131 million cards currently and the widespreading popularity of Visa deposit access products, merchants will have access to even greater revenue in the future.

In addition, Visa Electron utilizes existing infrastructure and procedures, minimizing any additional investment, and all transactions are 100% authorized on-line, guaranteeing merchant payment.

How does Visa Electron benefit Member banks?

Visa Electron provides Member banks with the chance to diversify and grow their payment card business and drive increased profitability.

It allows them to offer a widely accepted and highly functional payment product to customers who do not wish to pay by credit or who are not suited to a credit card. And because it uses existing infrastructure, a Visa Electron programme costs the same as a credit programme.

General Questions
Does this mean Visa is moving away from credit cards?

Not at all. Visa Classic and Gold cards have been extremely successful in Asia-Pacific and we will continue to consolidate and expand our existing product portfolio. Visa Electron is designed for consumers who desire the convenience, security and flexibility of paying by card but who do not wish to use credit. Therefore, the Visa and Visa Electron brands are complementary.

How is Visa Electron different from Maestro?

It is easier to use, more versatile and more widely accepted. Because Maestro is solely PIN-based, it has limited functionality and acceptance. By contrast, Visa Electron operates in the same manner as a Visa card and can be accepted at over 25 million merchants worldwide and millions of merchants on-line.

Is this a good time to be launching a new payment product, when there are predictions that the region will see both incomes and consumer spending falling?

Our goal is the displacement of cash at the point of sale, not the expansion of consumer debt. Therefore, the introduction of safer, more convenient and more versatile methods of payment is not dependent on broader economic factors. In fact, research shows that the use of payment cards is ultimately more cost-effective than the use of cash, so our products can actually be used to save money.
